| 2500bc-14/1300bc | A bell barrow encircled by a chalk cut ditch, the mound comprising a central flint cairn enveloped in a turf stack, and capped with chalk rubble. Under the mound was a circle of stake holes c10m in diameter with posts at some cardinal points. An avenue of stakes led to the primary burial, a central pit containing an unurned cremation with struck flint flakes. Also in the centre was a shaft grave cut 1.5m deep into the chalk with a coffin, possibly of wickerwork, at the bottom. The coffin was c1.5m x 0.5m and contained a bag with a lightly cremated body and a finely carved Wessex bone belt hook. |
