Gazetteer help file

• Site name: Enter part or all of site name
  e.g. Maiden Castle; Deal | Dover or Amesbury. Search is not case-sensitive. A search on Dorchester will retrieve sites from Dorchester and Dorchester-on-Thames
• Site number: Enter the code attributed to the site in the Gazetteer
• Burial codes: Enter a code or combination of codes (with or without period number) e.g. 5001 or 169 | 170
  Each code comprises 4 figures whose first number (5, 4, 3, 2 or 1) denotes the period to which the rest of the coded data relates. Thus 5 = 3500-2500bc, 4 = 2500-14/1300bc, 3 = 14/1300-8/700bc, 2 = 8/700-100bc, and 1 = 100bc-AD43. The remaining three figures in any code denote a characteristic of Location, Monument or Process of disposal of human remains occurring in that particular period. • Keyword search (per period): Search the text of the description for each period e.g. oak | birch | elm, deer & pig or child
  Note that this is a simple text search, therefore a search on the term 'bar' would return entries containing the words 'bar', 'bars' or 'scabbard' etc.
• Remains/period: A multi-period site may be coded Y5 N4 Y3 meaning that it has evidence worth recording for periods 5, 4 and 3 but no disposals in period 4. Enter e.g. N4, Y5 | Y4 or Y1 & Y2
• X,Y co-ordinates: A site or sites may also be retrieved by NGR X and Y coordinates. Widen search using grid coordinates by using the operators > or < in combination with National Grid square reference

General Points

• Select the maximum number of records you wish to pull up at each search (default setting is 100). The maximum number of results that can be returned in one page is 250. This is controlled by the system and cannot be exceeded. If your query returns more than this number then a link will be provided to view the others
